Introduction

The aim of the Chennai District Masters Athletic Association is to promote athletics (Track & Field) amongst veteran (Masters) athletes and sports-minded persons (Men & Women)from Chennai district aged 35 years and above.

It provides opportunity for men and women to participate in Track & Field events, in 5 years age-graded table viz: Ages 35 to 39 years group, 40 to 44 group, 45 to 50 group and so on up to 95 years plus group.

This is to enable them to keep fit physically and mentally by following a training routine.This regular physical activity helps in decelerating the rate of physical degeneration which is inevitable. It also greatly promotes a sense of camaraderie among them.

The Chennai Veteran Athletic Association conducts the Chennai District Athletic meet every year to select the best athletes to represent Chennai district and participate in the Tamil Nadu State Veteran meets. The athletes from Chennai district have won many laurels in the Tamil Nadu State meets, and National meets. Chennai district athletes selected for their excellent performance in the National meets have represented India and won laurels in the Asian and even World meets.

History

In the year 1987 The Madras District Veteran Athletic Association was formed by a group of dedicated veteran athletes, whose passion for sports and enthusiasm in athletics had not dampened by age. Instead they strived to build a proper platform from which veteran athletes will be able to participate in a systematic way.

The stalwarts instrumental in the formation of this association were Mr. SOYAMBULINGAM, Mrs. ROSE LAMECH, Mr.M.SUBBIAH, Mr. R.KALAICHELVAN, Mr.SAIT GOVINDARAJ, Mr.T.JOHN DEVASIR, Mrs.P.SASIKALA, Dr. KALAIMANI BABU under the able guidance and leadership of Mr.WALTER DAWARAM IPS, and Mr.CHENGAI SIVAM.

  • The eligible age limit to participate then was 40years and above for Men and 35years and above for women.
  • In 1995, the eligible age limit for Men was reduced from 40 to 35 years and above on par with women.
  • In 1996 after The Tamil Nadu State Government changed the name of Madras district as Chennai district, the Madras Veteran Athletic Association was renamed Chennai Veteran Athletic Association.
  • From 1987 to 2001,The Chennai Veteran Athletic Association functioned with Mr.Soyambulingam, Mrs.Roselamech , Mr.SaitGovindaraj, Mr.R Kalaichelvan as Secretaries.
  • In 2001 Mr.JOHN DEVASIR took over as the secretary of the Chennai Veteran Athletic Association under the president ship of Mr.UJAHAR SINGH IAS.
  • In 2002 the Association was registered as CHENNAI VETERAN ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (CVAA) and got affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Veteran Athletic Association (TNVAA)which in turn is affiliated to the Indian Veteran Athletic Association (IVAA). The IVAA is affiliated to the Asian Veteran Athletic Association and The World Association of Veteran Athletes.
  • In 2003 the name Chennai Veteran Athletics Association was changed to Chennai Masters Athletics Association in accordance with the world body changing its name from World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA) to World Masters Athletic Association. (WMAA)
  • In 2010 Mr. M.SHANBAGAMURTHY took over as the president of the Association from Mr.Samudrapandi IPS. Mr. JOHN DEVASIR continued as the secretary till his retirement in 2013.
  • In 2013 Mrs. P. SASIKALA took over as the secretary from Mr.John Devasir.
  • In 2017 the TNMAA wanted all the Tamil Nadu district associations to add the word ‘DISTRICT’ to their Association title.Hence Chennai Masters Athletic Association (CMAA) was changed to its current name as Chennai District Masters Athletic Association(CDMAA).
  • In 2017 Mrs. RUKMINI DEVI took over from Mrs.P.Sasikala and is currently the secretary of the CDMAA.
